Hahaha!!! I cannot tahan the confinement! i told my husband i do not wan to give birth again, not bcuz of the pain from c-sec or my pelvis bone always hurting whenever i sit, move or even lay down, its bcuz i cannot bath!!!! i wiped with white wine twice a day (both husband & MIL, as usual, say cannot la but they discount to 1 wiped per day), i on the air-con 24/7, expect when bathing my son. after he is fully clothed, air-con on again (but i am still sweating like a pig!!!). wash my hands everytime with water after everything i did. but i do listen to them on few things la ( i have to give in too), i never wash my hair for almost 1 mth, wear socks everytime except when i bath, wear jacket & pants whenever going out, drink only water cooked by my MIL. my husband scare i will have 风湿 when i am older but i told him, man never give birth before also will have 风湿 ma, how can they be so sure we woman who don obey the rules during confinement will have 风湿?? hee... i very metal teeth wan!

Hi there.. Go to chi medicine shop. Ask for jaundice medicine. There is 2 type, wood n flower. Ask for wood type. Then you boil it, after that you wipe your baby with the medicine water. Whole body. Definitely recover faster. Try it. Let me know if still not ok.
My no.1 jaundice till one month and I was told by PD that it's breastmilk jaundice. I was worried everyday for a month till my baby jaundice went away when he's abt one month old. My sis and cousins all breastfeeding all babies having the same condition so I think it's running in our family and as long as we keep monitoring not exceeding 20 I think it's fine.

Just gave birth two weeks ago to my no.2, same thing happened again but this time I am much calmer. Brought no.2 to see a not so good PD at first and got her to use the home therapy bili light, 3 days 2 nites but not very effective. And I am not going to her formula, now no.2 is seeing another PD and what he adviced made sense, as long as baby's liver not mature, there will always be bilirubin, so it's a matter of a matured liver, not about focuing on clearing the bilirubin. Give formula is only helping to bring down the bilirubin but as long as baby is growing well and the level is not too high, I think breastfeeding is still ok. That's what I am still doing.

hi mummies,

thanks so much for sharing all your experiences.. i'm now more assured that breastmilk jaundice is not so serious that i should give up bf.

however, my PD also mentioned that there is a 1 in 10,000 chance that baby might have a condition called biliary atresia, which is liver malfunction. did you PD say that and did he ask to do a blood test (not the heel prick, but a more serious one which draws blood from baby's hand)?

please share...

Yes, my baby did that test at Mount Alvernia. The nurse offered to hold him and do the test inside the room without me. I refused and insisted on holding my baby and talking to him to explain to him that its going to hurt but mummy will be with you all the way. My heart aches so badly when he wailed in pain! The nurse even had to squeeze to get more blood out... ok, sorry, didn't mean to scare you... but after that, the result is that baby's liver is functioning normally so its a great relieve. No more pricks!

Hi,
My bb also hv jaundice on day 3. I gave birth @ 37wk+++. I felt very upset n down at that time. Bb kept crying after my bf. some nurse say got colostrum, bb will b fine. But, some said no milk, should top up with formula. I admit I a bit sturborned at tht time. I dun wan bb took formula, n I kept bf him for a longer time. A nurse did inform us should phototherapy the bb n should let bb had formula.
The 1st jaundice test : 10.8, b4 discharged: 13.5. therefore, we stayed 1 more day with the bb. The last test is 12.4. Doc did mentioned if less than 12, can go home; if not, by have to stay. I worry so I decided to stay, but later the doc let bb discharged, on condition have to go back to review in 1 wk time or if the bb is look like drowsy n yellowish, should go back to hospital immediately.
i a bit Kia su, I went back for review at the 3rd of discharged. After the blood test, the jaundice is 11.3. But, still should monitor the bb.
my bb a bit dark. So , when I press his face, a bit yellow. But, my mom said because we r not fair person.

Mummies, if baby's jaundice level is not so high that it's at very dangerous level (eg: 30), breastfeeding will actually help baby wash the bilirubin out of the body through their poo poo. You will see that their poo poo is a bit greenish and watery. The issue is jaundice will last longer in breastfed babies. My baby was a very sleepy jaundice baby (jaundice between 12-15) before he's 1 month old. His yellowishness decreased when he was near 1 month but the yellowish in his eye white still remains until he's about 1.5month old. You can imagine how worried I was! I cried almost everyday! But I carried on breastfeeding and he gained weight very well. He grew to be a very healthy boy! Phew! No more jaundice by the time he's 2 month old. The pediatrician I went to is very pro breastfeeding. He never asked me to stop. He encouraged me to breastfeed and told me some of the babies he sees had jaundice until 3 month but they continued breastfeeding. Parents are only asked to stop breastfeeding if the jaundice is at very dangerous level. If there is no sun, I suggest renting the phototherapy machine home for baby and continue breastfeeding. Not worth it to give up breastfeeding because of this unless it's very dangerous level. If your baby is like mine, around 12-15, it is not necessary to stop. I can recommend pro breastfeeding prediatrician to you. Some pediatrician dont't understand and wants baby's jaundice level to drop very fast so they asked mummies to stop breastfeeding but this is not beneficial to baby in the long run and sabotage the poor mummies' efforts to breastfeed :(

To add on mummies, you can read my blog to find out more about my breastfeeding journey as well as FAQ that might help you answer some questions. It's really a very arduous very worthwhile journey! :)

hang on in there JJ2011...
if your bb's is physiological jaundice, it should clear very soon... photo-theraphy is supposed to help physiological jaundice.. whether bm or fm, just make sure baby drinks sufficiently to flush the jaundice out.
if it's breastmilk jaundice, it'll take a longer time to clear..
so you need to wait and see which is it...

I would say she's ok hehe. When discharged from KK bilirubin level was 189, yesterday checked at polyclinic jump to 220 and today become 201. She's now 3 hours feeding time. I'm become zombie already @.@ did you wake up your baby when the time is up or you wait until your baby cry? My friend said we should let the baby sleep as now is the time for brain to develop. But in my case, she's jaundice and i need to keep her 8 feedings 1 day.... @.@ wondering how's other mummies?

U need to wake baby up every 3 hours for feeding. Babies with jaundice tends to be sleepy. If u don't feed ur baby regularly, how is she going to dispose the bilirubin?

Thanks diza!! Will do so. Did you guys mix with the fm so that the jaundice will gone quickly? Did you request for the test from PD? I have O blood and baby blood type is A! There's some jaundice causing by ABO incompability. Not really sure what type of jaundice is mine...

When my baby was hospitalised, doctor did check for blood incompatibility but it was ruled out so my boy had BM jaundice. I didn't give any FM for my boy. When he was in the hospital, I fully latch him. Nurses only gave FM at night or when I'm not at the hospital. His jaundice was very high to the extent that they used 5 UV lights and strip him naked. After discharge, I didn't give FM at all coz i fear he may reject BM. My boy was on BM and it took abt 6 to 7 weeks for his level to go down to below 100. If u want his jaundice to go away quickly, u can give FM but it might affect ur supply so u have to diligently pump every 3 hours. Again, ultimately the choice is urs. For me, I was determine to BF him even when my husband and mother wanted to give FM. After explaining the benefits of BM, they supported me.

My gal also had breastmilk jaundice. I gave FM for 48 hours cos we wanted to determine that it was breastmilk jaundice and not other underlying conditions. My gal's bilirubin level was close to 300 when she was 3 weeks and it was going up instead of down. so to determine to cause, we gave formula milk. however, after 48 hours, the level increased instead of decrease. so, was refered to specialist and was told to be off TCM herbs. As I had pre eclumpsia, my gal's blood count at birth was higher than normal so she has more bilirubin in her blood to clear. that is why she has prolonged jaundice. in the end, i stopped tcm herbs and continued to bf and she's much better now at close to 3 mths. as long as jaundice level is oging down and is below 200, it is ok. and yes, wake baby up for feeds every 3 hours so that she can pass out the bilirubin

Thanks all!! My gal's jaundice level is much much better now!! 163. Feel so relieve. Hopefully by next week can clear all. I only gave her 10 - 30 ml fm, depends on my mood. Of coz i won't like it but no choice. Agree with Alisa , i better no pu rather than my gal's jaundice can't go down. I choose not to eat ginger for now.

My son is having g9pd deficiency. Have not discharge yet. Today is day 4. I have started pumping out but not given him my breastmilk. Will my breastmilk affect him? My confinement lady cooked dishes with Ginger. And I had soup with herbs. Should I or should I not feed him with breastmilk?

35 weeker jaundice.

My daughter was born @ 35+2 weighing 2.435kg. We have abo incompatibility as she is an AB+ blood type & I'm A+. Therefore she has a very high risk for jaundice. Today is day 7 and I was discharged on day 2. I'm deeply saddened to be home, being confined and all without her which my husband also feels the same. I've heard too many times, give up BF, your milk causing the jaundice, not enough supply.. etc. But I insisted on BF. Due to me not being able to see her daily and no one to transport my EBM daily, I told the nurses to supplement her with FM if needed. My baby's hands and feet and are bruised due to so many blood taking. And the PD wants to keep her levels below 150. Her levels is 160s today. The first few days I was very stress, the bills, the seperation, the anxiety.. NO ONE supported my choice of BF. I'm still trying to express with my baby not here, of cos direct latching is the best, but I don't exactly know how much is her intake. I don't quite know if I wanna continue BF her, I know about all benefits. I'm a nurse, not paediatric trained but I do have the knowledge. I just want my baby HERE, my breasts leaks, pains, n pumping is such a hassle, I still hear my family says don BF her. Today is the only day no one went to visit her.. :(

Re: 35 weeker jaundice.

Hi dunkatelic, firstly. congrats on your newborn! It is really nice to hear that you are still insistent on bf even tho circumstances all go against you. Yes, there is such things called bm jaundice and is really common. my 2 babies had that but I did total bf and their jaundice managed to clear after about 1.5 mths. If you are really under a lot of stress over bf, why not try supplementing? as in do alternate feeds like first feed bm, second feed fm, third feed bm etc. but then, you must also pump when you are giving fm. this is to maintain supply. how much are you pumping now? when you do alternate feed, jaundice will definitely come down a lot due to the fact that baby pee/poo more as they dun digest fm as well as bm. so, when the jaundice level is more ok, you can swtich to total bf. it is really ok to supplement with fm. I suppose finance is a little issue to you. so, by supplementing, you are helping to bring doen the level and avoid the need to go back to phototherapy. dun stress yourself too much. you are still giving your baby bm. so is still ok. in fact, you are better off than mummies who are unable to bf due to various reasons. so you are blessed that you hv milk to gv to your baby
