hospital charges/packages

Hi. I'm 5 weeks pregnant and have an appt at KKH with a senior consultant. My first time so I am unaware of most things. Would appreciate help if you know the following answers:

Finance:

1) I keep reading about packages etc for delivery - what is that about? Is it only applicable to private hospital and not KK? Would I need to pay cash upfront before delivery? If I am not wrong, we pay as we go along for each consultation at KK?

Classes:

2) I understand that there are public clinic, private clinic and The Private Suite at KK? What is the difference between them? Also, I would prefer that my gynea also delivers the baby - so which option should I pick? Would I need to make the decision at the begining of my appointment (my first appointment is on 9th Sep 08)

Thanks - I'm sure I will have lots of questions as time goes on!

HI,

i m not very sure if KK have prenatal pkg.. But they do pkg only starts from 12 weeks preggy onwards. If you are visiting a subsidy gynae in KK pls take note you may not be arrange to see the same gynae each visit ( not very advisable due to bad experince from my frens ). Yes no matter which hospital u delivery have to pay upfront cash as deposit ( admission fees ) but refunded after medisave deducts ( pls not medisave deductions and caps so additional will deduct from your deposit if not sufficient still muz top up).

Prenatal pkg usually don include detail scans, supplements.

If you prefer to visit same gynae and same gynae to deliver, look for a private doc ( KK oso hv but dunno gd or not ) from KK or outside. Subsidy gynae in KK cannot choose when you go for visits check ups and delivery. Oh ya for subsidy delivery is done by mid wives not gynae.

Thanks - I have managed to choose my gynea at KK.

Just out of curiosity why do people choose to go to private hospitals (eg TMC,etc) ?

Becos of bad remarks at KKH nowadays.. Of cos private hospital nurses are more nice compared to KKH. But KKH is still gd as they are most specialised in kids and women so in any case of complications they will send or refer you back to KKH.

I guess for smooth delivery services are still best at private hosp.

So you are getting a private gynae at KKH i suppose. Subsidy gynae is not very advisable unless you hv financial problem other wise spend a little more $$ to get a private doc in KKH will be gd.. Is gd to be safe than sorry.

no matter how much you pay for antenatal care max claim is only $450 when delivery

So i guess you haven started on antenatal pkg yet usually plkg start 12 weeks onwards.. $200 for 1 st vist is consider expensive.

My gyane charges $100 for 1st time consultation subsequent $50 ( if not under pkg ) ultra scan $70 for 1st time subsequent $50 .

Under my antenatal pkg:
$650
Includes all checkups till birth and 1 checkup aftr birth
( 12weeks onwards till 24week is 1 vist every 4 weeks, 24weeks onwards is 3 weeks once, 30weeks 2 weeks once, 34 weeks 1 weeks onces )

every vist includes ultra scan, urine test, blood pressure test, weight monitoring. Hearing of BB heartbeat.

Blood test ($200) and detail scan ($108) are seperate charges

Abt 28weeks to 30weeks will collect $600 deposit for hospital addmission fees. this is deductable from my delivery final bill

What do you mean by "smooth" delivery at private hospitals?

What bad stories have you heard about KK? Money is no object for me but I want the best place possible and private hospitals seem very disjointed and not integrated.

smooth delivery = natural delivery w/o complications.

private hospitals such as TMC provides you with great care from nurses and mid wives. They will come and see if your doing fine with your bb when BF and assist you if you have any latching on problem no matter your 1st/2nd time mothers.

request are acted upon prompty e.g a cup of milo will be soon ready in 5 mins.

Stories of KK from my DH friends are that the nurses arent friendly and helpful to you, services aren't great at all.

just that in case of any complications, or any special medicine, KKH is a 1 stop place e.g SGH, the HQ for hospitals.

Everyone experienced different labours with diff nurses and hospital. So it depends on luck too.

Too many cases to be mentioned...

Is not just the service, i m sure the are gd nurses and gynaes there but i'm afraid not majority..

I hv cases where due to carelessness of gynae baby heart beat stopped just before scanning and my fren had to delivery her still born baby herself in the suite with no help. FYI she waited 2hr for the scan if the scan was done early things could be detected baby can be saved as baby already 6mth. I m sure no one needs to Q in private clinic dat long to doa scanning i suppose.. And for KKH not every visit got scan ok. Esp if you are not TPS paitient

i see. But smooth delieveries then is much dependent on the person, not the doctor.

What about Tan Kim Teng? Is she good and are her nurses good? I been to one visit and they were very good - scan then routine tests then doctor consultation. All seems friendly enough and efficient.

Please let me know your expriences at KK if you have gone there as I would like to know what I am getting myself into on the delivery day.

my friend commented while staying there, the nurses are not attentive or respond asap to their needs.

I visited her in March this year after her C-section, BB was sneezing all the way (on the day of bb born), me asked them to check after someone responded afer me clicked the bell.

the nurse came in took a look and walked away without saying anything or came back or ask some one to attend to us.

After a good 30 mins, me pressed the bell again (as mummy was v.worried ald), the same nurse came in again and said that she was : bz with other patients and BB sneezing cos its cold but the temperature cant adjust, so you just bear with it ok.

So walked away without coming back.

Anyway, even if its "smooth" delivery, nurses can also scold u when u are shouting in pain.

Never heard before?

I followed my dad to KKH (cant remember when) to visit his collig's wife (some women sickness) and a preggy was next to our bed giving birth, (think they couldnt make it in time to push her to labour ward as baby's hear is coming out.
She was shouting in pain when the nurses scolded : u can tahan and get shiok when u fxxxxxx and cry so much when u give birth! just close your mouth shut and pushhhhh!

luckily BB came out fast, if not the poor mother i think will kena more fierce scoldings!

anyway, hope u will meet nice, friendly and caring nurses!

My friend had delivered at KKH with a private gynae. She didn't had much complains abt the hospital, only mention that she was first push to the delivery ward, after few hours push to normal ward. She walk around then, as her water bag was only leaking not burst yet. Then came back to her ward, the food was there and she didn't managed to eat anything that was served by the hospital and was ask whether she wants to inject epidural..

Overall, she compared and the delivery charges and doctor fees was like 200-300 difference.

Last week, i went to do my pre-admission at gleneagles..walking to get a ticket no., a so called "bell boy" came over and ask what if im doing admission or wat? I felt it's so hotel like..comformtable feeling...I don't noe how KKH like...but im defintely happy with the more $$ im paying for the good outstanding service they attained.

actually, structured hospital such as SGH offers good gyna care too and the nurses there are great!
They are pro-breastfeeding and moreover, it can be subsidised.
Dr Devendran is good! Dr Tan H K - a senior con.
Personally, my con is Dr Devan,he reassures me and discuss plans how to go about the labour and listens to me. If anything wrong or what, he never fails to update me with the latest progress.

I agree private hosp has better service. i went KKH before i change to TMC. the nurses at KKH are rude. Went twice for checkup. Although its different nurses the service is the same (bad). the waiting time is very long even i have appt with the Dr. I heard from friends that if you get those senior Dr, the service will be better.
Thumbs up for TMC.

yup, pay more for better service. such a disgrace to us . . . . they should go for the GEMS courses!

GOVT hospital somemore....

Rates at TMC similar to KKH but services are 1 up and 1 down!
