Re: How do i teach....? Primary 1 Maths

Hi

"My Pals Are Here Mathematics" is by Dr Fong Ho Kheong is used by over 85% of
Singaporean schools
. The series is also used by 25 countries all over the world. And in America, his textbooks will soon reach another 2 million students.

Globally, more than a million have been trained on these methodologies. It has proven to top the world in The International Maths & Science Studies (TIMSS) Global Maths Studies for over 10 years since 1995. Dr Fong is currently an Associate Professor and Head of Mathematics and Science in the Emirates College for Advanced Education, Abu Dhabi. He is charged with the responsibility to bring these proven methods to the Emirates. He is very well-sought after in Worldwide Conferences for his own Brand of Mathematics. And you can see for yourselves (as in the picture below) the overwhelming response for his talks.Dr. Fong was Associate Professor of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was also the founding President of the Association of Mathematics Educators from 1994-1998 and the Chief Editor of The Mathematics Educator from 1998-2000. Dr Fong obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of London. He specializes in teaching high ability children as well as children with problems in mathematics. As a mathematics education specialist, he provides consultancy work to help children with difficulties in learning mathematics. His research work includes teaching thinking to solve mathematical problems and diagnosing children with mathematical difficulties.

He has developed more 100 journal articles, research reports, and primary and secondary mathematics books. He also authored a series of guidebooks for parents and teachers.

You can get his books at popular such as
1) The Essential Parents Guide to Primary 1 Maths
2) One of the workbooks for Primary 1 on Model Approach (misplaced my book)
3) Challenging Mathematical Problems a) Model & b) Heuristic is for pupils from Pri 4 - 6)

We went to his seminar 4 yrs back on Model Approach and during then he was living in Australia. We are also using workbook by Andrew Er and Fabian Ng for our kids.

Enjoy!

erhm, just to share some of my teaching tips with tuition & teaching in schools.

with primary one kids, i usually have to draw diagrams. and i will have to use arrows. but bearing in mind, children cannot see that clearly if we keep drawing the arrows on the same sheet of paper. if you need to explain again, always redraw the entire diagram. and you will need to talk while drawing.

so for instance i would tell a simple situation.

i would draw a box. and then i would draw 5 circles inside to represent apples.
then i put two arrows to represent arrows to show that 2 apples were added.

so how many apples are there altogether now?

then get the child to explain what happened...then you will prompt, which was the before and which was the after.

then i would also use buttons or magnets to help me to explain.
sometimes i will get the kid to draw while i tell the story.

hope this helps.

we cant jump to model drawing too soon!

Thanks obscurestloh, i roughly get what you meant. Think i'll give that a try.

My kid is able to construct and understand the usage of Before and After when he makes sentences for English. But i don't understand y he has difficulty in applying that concept in Mathematics. Will do with the drawing and prompting ideas that you mentioned.

Math's in our daily life. Instead of sitting down & explaining a hundred times to your kid, get outta the house or even @ your own kitchen. When baking cakes, weighing scale teaches your kid volume. Cut apples into sizes & your r teaching fractions and sizes.Pouring a glass of into different shapes & sizes of containers & that'll be another topic your kid's learning. Have fun! Cheers!
