Hi Edna,

I sent my daughter to Julia Gabriel's Play Nest and did a trial at Growing Up Gifted.

My 2 cents' worth...the environment at JG is more structured as compared to GUG. Also, I felt that the teachers at JG were better. It could also be because we had a good teacher at JG. (Just FYI, during the trial at GUG, the teacher and assistants spoke broken English.) THAT was the deciding factor against me sending my daughter to GUG. Having said that, the fees at GUG are much cheaper though. Perhaps you can sign up for a trial at the schools and make a decision from there? Hope this helps.

My son, Brendan was about 13 mths when i attended both trials. i personally like GUG, though many of my frens in sg prefered JG.

Why?

JG-- has 2 'free' play time which i thot was unnecessary as they could always ve their own playtime @ home with their toys. One playtime is indoors and one is 'outdoors' with the ride ons, slides...

one of my frens enjoys JG's 'dramatic' story telling and i like the art part.

GUG-- is billingual, there is a 10 mins chinese session and sing along in chinese too. I prefer the sing along sessions BUT like miffy_cheeks, i do not like the teachers and if i had signed on, i would ve requested a diff. timeslot with diff. teachers/ instructors.

the make ur own snack part was really 'exaggerated', felt that could ve been eliminated!! :spamxxx:

I signed up my girl with GUG since she is 14 months and she has been with GUG until 30 months but will be stopping the lessons next term cos she has learned all the phonics there and getting quite bored with the class. Actually I want to switch her to JG when my girl turns 18 months but the timing slot for the trial class given to me one week before was given to another mummy (who called up 2 weeks later than me and reason given to me was the mummy will or might confirm to sign up with them), I decided not to go for the trial cos i dun like being treated like spare tyre. Wanted to go to JG at Ivan Road but too far cos not travelling by car.

Find GUG is good if you just want your child to learn phonics. i am putting my son next year when he turns 14 months cos want to let him learn phonics

My 4yo is attending early reading and writing at GUG. So far, she enjoys the class and has shown very keen interest in the zoophonics. Will stop once she's expected to finish the zoophonics next term.

So far, I like the environment at GUG. Will enrol my younger one there in future.

at such tender age, i'll prefer to develop his motor skill and socialising with other kids instead. i'll hv sign up for a trial class at the little gym at forum the shopping mall this sunday.

I have tried both JG and GUG for DS and DD but decided to settle for Kidsloft instead.

I would say it really depends on which teacher u r allocated to for JG and GUG.

Hi mummies,

I would like to share about Genius Space. It's got a holistic learning programmes for infants and tots which I think is very good. It teaches phonics and math using drama and story play with lots of singing. By the way it uses ALphabet Zoo which is UK English (more appropriate in S'pore context) rather than ZOo phonics (US English). Indeed it's got brain development programmes incorporated too.

I didn't send dd for GUG so will only comment on JG.

JG has 2 structured play times for Play Nest - one outdoor and one indoor. There is also Art and Craft time and snack time where the kids all sit down and have a snack together - which i think is really cute. :)

The storytelling by the instructor is VERY animated and engaging, so much so that my VERY active dd who has been running around class (at other centres) sat still THROUGHOUT the story - a very rare moment indeed. Haha... :D

The song and movement segment is also a lot more fun and engaging (than Kindermusik) and I guess it's largely coz of the nature of the instructors and also the structure of the whole programme. JG has a wide range of activities within the 1.5hr session and song and movement is just one of them so the kids are not bored easily - or least my dd wasn't as bored as she was at Kindermusik... :)
If you want bilingual class, JG offers bilingual classes too but only for 18mths onwards (PlayClub). My dd will be attending that bilingual class in Jan 2010. There is no bilingual class available for PlayNest (6-18mths).

My gal went to a trial class at GUG. Each time she settled down to do the activity, the teacher moved to the next one. Both of us were so tired playing catch up thru out the session. GUG isn't for her!

She went to JG for 1 year before we settled on CC. She enjoyed it so much!

is there trial classes fr julia gabriel and how much issit? can 9 month old attend?
PlayNest is for 6-18mth old babies so net can attend. :)

There's usually open house for the first week of term so you can arrange with JG for trial lesson. Currently the holiday lessons are going on now and term will start only in Jan 2010. But you can call and enquire first. There may be a waiting list for trials so call early.

I only brought her to the holiday class. Tomorrow's the last lesson. There was no vacancy for PlayNest earlier so I just enrolled her for PlayClub in 2010 coz by then she'd be 18mths.

If you're into flashcards and believe that enrichment classes should have flashcards, then JG's not suitable for you. JG's belief is to make learning interesting and so the use of flashcards is out. :) That said, you can do flashcards at home on your own and let net learn in a different way at JG. I think it's more balanced that way.

Hubby and I prefer her to learn through self-exploration so we're comfortable with JG's practice and philosophy. Some parents may find that there's too much play time in PlayNest. :D
