When to train toddler to zzz alone

My toddler will be turning 18 months old soon. I like to know when I should start training her to sleep in her baby cot in her room alone & how. I will appreciate it if you can share your experience with me. Is it too early to start? I always sleep with my door closed & I am afraid I cannot hear her cry if she cries or makes noise in the middle of the night.

I think 3 is the best age to start your child off. Its very important to teach him/her self reliance. I found this article you could read.

Mmm... But it says "Shop for decorations for the child's room. Usually brightly coloured walls, Mickey Mouse hangings and a few soft toys are the only things needed." I was told to remove all distracting things from the room if I want to train my 18 month old toddler to sleep by herself.

My son is 15m now and he still cries when he wakes up and does not see us next to him. Any solutions?
