Which Non-Private Hospital is Better?

Go to KKH for the state-of-the-art equipments ... this is critical if the pregnancy is not so much a straightforward one.
For your info, in some cases, complicated cases still get transferred to KHH ... from other hospitals, whetehr private or not.

Go to NUH for the more established gynaes ... the most senior there are Prof Mary Rauff & Prof PC Wong, the former being a very nice gentle lady who delivered both my sons.
If nothing else, these 2 share a private practice in Mount E besides heading the O&G Dept in NUH.

I dun think SGH should even come into the discussion ...
In Singapore, every government structured hospital have their own areas of specialisation ... & SGH's is simply not in O&G.

I agree with u that no matter what happens, any complicated cases will still transfer to KKH. For me I work in medical line both government and private before. But I still choose KKH. Because I can trust them in medical. If u want good service just pay more and upgrade to private suites.

But got to agree, that services provided by the nurses and other staff is really depends on ur luck, most importantly choose a good doctor. Coz he will be the one taking care of u throughout the 9 months!

I couldn't agree more with VroomVroomBoys, SGH shouldn't come into the discussion as they are not specialised in O&G. I recently delivered at SGH and it is a horrible experience for me. Don't ever choose SGH. I delivered my number 2 there cos my gynae is with SGH and it's near to my workplace. I had an earlier op done in SGH and stayed in b2 four bedded room and is so much happier than my recent delivery experience as their A1 single-bedded patient.

Process
When I was suddenly called in and ordered to the operating theatre for my C-sect, no one inform my husband (although i told the nurses to inform him) and he waited outside for a few hours getting worried sick and the nurses just tell him I am just getting ready for op. Me on the other hand, kept worrying if he is informed and kept asking if he will be able to come into the operating theatre and all the nurses told me - DON"T WORRY, YOUR HUSBAND WILL BE THERE. Nearing my turn to be operated and no sight of my husband, I asked if he is coming and they finally told me NO cos I didn't submit the consent form. Well, none of them asked for that form from me! Well, I don't give birth everyday how would I know which form is needed, there are so many.

Discharing arrangment was hell too. The business office insist that I must pay personally and I had to go down in a wheelchair and it's only paying deposit, it's not the final bill. I received a couple of invoices from SGH finally, really confusing and I received notification that 2 deduction was made from my CPF. Even more confusing.

Facilites and Food
Though I didn't expect spanking new room for their A1 ward, but the clock wasn't working, aircon wasn't working properly (either freezing aircon or no air con at all) and the water spray is not within reach while seated in the bathroom, not to mention that the toilet bowl is at the farthest end of the bathroom.... when you had op done and is in stiches, every step is an agonising move.

The food of cos, taste horrible and though i chose confinement meal - I get oranges etc. I finally ordered western meal (taste more edible), since the confinement food isn't the proper confinement food and it tastes yucky.

Staff
Save for some nice and caring nurses, the majority is average or rude or inexperienced. Especially those from the nursery. Since I was breastfeeding, they would bring the baby to my room at unearthy hours for feeding and they would just come into the room, switch on the main brightest light, wheeled baby to my side and say 'breastfeeding' and go off. I am alone and getting up is a struggle with my c-sect op, let alone get up to carry my baby from the cot. This happened a couple of times. An inexperienced nurse was sent to clean my wound before my discharge. Why did I say that she's inexperienced? She was dragging the cotton wool across my wound and hurt and i had to ask her to pat on the wound instead. Isn't this common knowledge???

The nurses' favourite phrase - We are not from the same department. Apparently, the nursery nurses and the labor ward nurses don't communicate with each other. I have to pass the message to the right dept otherwise they will tell me that they are not from the same department. Or worse, they say ok and just simply disappear.
I learnt that on my second day so when my nipple cracked and bleed and I request for the nipple cream, I had to ask every nurses that I see for the past 12 hours before I get it. and every single time, the nurses would say ok, they will request for me and nothing is done. No one updates me or gives me the cream, until approx 12 hours later when the magical cream finally appear.

From the quick glances of the confusing invoices and CPF deduction notification, my bill seems to be extremely high for a non complicated c sect A1 package. but I shall not comment further on this since I have not clarified with the hospital yet. This is yet another unpleasant task i have to undertake, besides making ANOTHER trip to pay the balance of the bill. If the bill does indeed come up to the amount I think it is (approx 8K - 9K), I would rather go to Thomson again. Almost everything at Thomson wins SGH hands down, and that is speaking from my first delivery experience 10 years ago.

Finally, a little amusing sharing for all... when I was arranging to be discharged, the nursery dept came and did a discharge 'report' of my baby and told me - please come back to SGH if your baby needs to be seen by a PD but don't come here if your baby has high fever. Why I asked, the nurse replied this will infect other babies. No matther how I phrase my question, they could only repeat the sentences above.
I know that SGH does not have a specialised PD dept but their phrasing is simply hilarious.

I stayed in kkh three times, once (delivery) in 2006 and twice (miscarriage) in 2012..I must say I dont encounter any issue and is quite satisfied with their service. .but not sure whether is it because I stay in A1 room
