A mother’s touch is the first manifestation of love that a child can feel. It is also the language that a baby understands the most. According to many studies, a mother’s touch does not only give a baby the feeling of love, comfort and security, but it also improves the baby’s cognitive function and builds resilience to stress. But how can a mum tell she loves her baby? Let’s explore the ways to best express your love through touch:

1. Massaging your baby.
A good massage instantly calms your little one, giving him a peaceful good night’s sleep.

2. Breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding provides your baby the nutrition he needs. More importantly, it brings you closer to your baby, and makes for a perfect touch-bonding moment that only you and your little darling can share.

3. Patting his back.
Patting your baby’s back to allow him to burp promotes good blood circulation and proper digestion – plus, what a joy to hear that cute little burp from your little darling!

4. Hugging.
How your baby wakes up in the morning defines his mood for the rest of the day. Start his day right by giving your baby a warm and tight embrace. It will surely make his day brighter.

5. Tickling.
Your little one absolutely loves to be tickled during playtime! Watch him giggle as your fingers reach his ticklish spots. Plus, you get to hear him giggle, which makes everything more adorable!

6. Soothing.
Do you notice how your touch can immediately calm your baby when he cries because of rashes? Your touch makes him feel that everything is going to be all right.

7. Caressing him.
With your gentle caress, your baby will be snoozing his way to slumber in no time. As he sleeps, keep him feeling protected with your comforting touch.

8. Holding him.
A simple act of holding your baby close to you leads to stronger mother-baby bonding. This creates an instant intimate connection between you and your baby.

9. Bathing him.
Bathing is also a time for caring. Take time to make bath time more enjoyable for your baby with lots of playful touches.

10. Guiding his first steps.
Being there and holding his hands as your baby gets through this milestone is going to be one of the best memories you will ever have.

Let this be ended with this wonderful poem:

Mothers Touch
by Kristi D. Hadley-Godeker
I’m so afraid with her I might make a mistake.
To discipline the situation, always a risk to take.
I may get so angry, and yell so loud…
Wanting her to be a good girl, make me proud.
So young in age, though older in mind…
The biggest part of her so loving gentle and kind.
I want her to have a good future, really succeed.
Working long hours, hard to give her the attention she does need.
One day in her future she will know my love is true.
All the sacrifices will be seen, as with her little girl, wondering what to do.
I look at her so pretty it frightens me, the best reward is molding her into the person she will be.
I see her changing right before my eyes, nervous for I get only so many tries.
Remember friendship will develop later as she’s an adult.
After she’s lived life and knows the way it felt.
I will get her ready for life that can hurt so much
Then and only then…
She will be thankful I guided her with a mothers touch.

“MummySG, where every Mum is awesome.”
