Hi mummies

My baby about 1 week old , I hear heavy breathing from him during sleeping. I can hear there are phlegm in his throat it get pretty bad during night time.. Now 3 week old, it seem to get worse, he make some cries during sleeping and I have to carry him in a slant position to make him feel better..

Past 2 weeks I had bring him to see doc

KKH (A&E) - The doc said nothing wrong with him , lung is ok. I told him bout the phelgm thing , he didnt say much juz give me nose drop which so far doesnt help.

Ooi baby & children clinic (DR Ooi) - Told me same thing bb breathing is ok, lung is ok. I told bout the phlegm. He told me some bb will have it. if it is not due to flu n cough, the phlegm for some bb will last till few mth and will go away by itself. No med given

everynight i see my bb struggle to sleep , dunno wat else to do. I can see that all the phlegm seem to stuck at his throat. I'm not sure shld i bring him to see another doc or any mummies here can advise me or recommend me doc..

thanks..

Hi Mummy!

Don't worry about it. Its normal! My son experienced exactly the same thing when he was 3 weeks old. I was also thinking the same as you that he has some phlegm in the throat. He used to breathe awkwardly as well. Different sounds used to come always but it feels they have phlegm although I don't think so they have.

I asked to a nurse and she said its normal. And after few months it went away on its own. And about the sleep, they will find it difficult to sleep that time...I had to put so much effort to put my son to sleep when he was 3 weeks also. So don't worry about it Mummy!

I suggest that you let other doctors check him up. It's really not normal for babies. Have you undergo from new born screening? Go to specialist.

Haha....its ok Mummy! Every mother wants to make sure their child is fine!
As to make baby feel better...I'm not sure if it applies to you but I used to hear my child's phlegm in the throat the moment I switch on the ac at night so mostly just on the fan.

my son also have v strong and heavy breathing when he was a newborn. sounds like phlegm and snoring. PD said this is very normal as their nostril is still v small and this heavy breathing will goes off when he reach 6-8mths. true enough the heavy breathing sound slowly goes off b4 we realise it. by 5-6 mths old we didnt hear any strong breathing alrdy. since this is not a medical pro, so i dont think there is any medication that can helps. =)

Sometimes the nose is block due to thick mucus, clean for them more often with thin cootonbud for infant.Wet the bud with warm water, roll the bud slowly into the nostril pull it out,can see dirty stuff stick on bud, baby will feel/breath better.Jia u mummies, nothing wrong with ur baby.

same thing here.. we thought they didn't extract the 'phelgm' out totally.. but PD assured us that it's due to her narrow nostril thus the noise.. true enough, a few months later it just disappear on it's own..

ya i tot so too. i noticed this sound when we were still in the hospital but pd keep saying is okay, even the nurses said so. until my GMIL keep PESTERING me and INSISTED that the sound is due to phlegm den I got no choice but to bring up this matter to the pd again. But actually, this is very normal for NB babies.. hahaha
