Hi all, I'm posting this on behalf of my friend who just gave birth.

Her son has ear that may need some medical attention. Would appreciate if any one of you can recommend a specialist who can help her.

Thanks.

As of now, she found out the condition:- Microtia - Grade 3

She first needs a scan to determine if there's a middle ear and inner ear but such scans can't be done till abt 3-4 mths usually.

The surgery to reconstruct the ear can be done from 6 yr on depending on the size of the child.

She wants to know if anyone's baby has such a condition and if they have any pediatric docs to recommend for her son. She already shortlisted some but would like to have recommendations, just to be on the safe side. Don't wish to go round in circles looking for a random specialist who can treat her son.

I have a student who is born like that too.

They did not do reconstruction (plastic surgery) but only a minor op to open the ear canal cos his inner ear structures are all ok.

Din they detect it during detailed scan? Cos my boy's detailed scan, we saw the ear clearly. Then they could have more time to look for a specialist.

My friend's baby girl is seeing a ENT specialist at Gleneagles. I try to help you ask for contact.

Thanks stonston!!! Please PM me contact if you manage to get it :) Greatly appreciate!!

No... The problem wasn't relayed to her during her detailed scans. Sigh. She said it must be because she's a sub patient at KKH so she might be getting the inexperienced sonographers and doctors.

I sent my gal to Professor Lynne H Y Lim from NUH. My gal failed (2 times) the hearing test at birth.

For ear problems where some levels of hearing are impaired, it's best to see an ENT specialist first before a plastic surgeon. My niece also was diagnosed with microtia (grade 2) and when we sought help from our doctor Dr Lau Chee Chong, he first assessed if hearing loss was present to determine whether surgery or other major treatments are required. This is especially important for young ones as problems hearing can lead to speech impediments. Anyway, my niece ended up having to do the surgery, which was done smoothly. The results were good and worth it, though the procedure should also be done early.
