exclusive pumping

my baby is 3 weeks old. also doing exclusive pumping. so far supply is sufficient to meet his demand. however, baby is usually impatient during night feeds and will wail loudly when waiting for ebm to be heated up. am starting to contemplate re-latching him at night but dont know if it's still possible when he has been drinking from bottle for past few weeks.

when i tried latching him after i came home from hospital, i was literally fighting with him. And coz CL wasn't quite positive about BM, i gave in to bottle feed :( How do you mummies warm up your ebm and after warming up, can keep for how long before giving to baby? And how do you all cope when heading out? wont you have to bring along many stuff for feeding besides the diapers...etc? sorry for the many many questions coz i am really still overwhelmed with this new role as a mummy. =)

Hi!

My baby is almost 4mths, have been pumping exclusively fm the start as baby had issues latching plus I had some lump problems(quite a long story)

We are often out n baby is fully on EBM, this is wat we do;

- bring bottles of chilled EBM in cooler bag ice pack, each bottle with a little more than a feed ), no. of bott depends on length of trip,
-vacuum flask with hot water( in case nursing room doesn't have any hot water)
-small container which we can fill with hot water to warm the EBM
-spare teats

Sounds like loads of stuff but once you have tried n done it a few times, you will not be that bad - worth every bit of effort n it gets easier each time!

Cheers and enjoy youself!

Thanks Marie for the advice! =)

After warming ebm, how long can the milk be kept?

How often do you pump now and for how long each time?

I tried pumping every 3-4 hourly but been skipping the middle of night pump. Worried that supply will eventually drop :(

Hi Lydlydlyd,

We usually warm just abt 10-15mins b4 baby feeds, then try to get her to drink up within 30mins(we hav it easier coz our baby doesn't drink much n she is always on schedule) - basically following e rough general rule for prepared FM...

Some nursing rooms can be very cold n e milk doesn't stay warm 4 long esp when our princess takes her time, so we warm again but we don't warm one feed more than 2 times.

For the 1st few trips u can go to malls with better nursing rooms so it won't be too intimidating hot water n feeding spaces available.can do trial run at off peak hrs,Eg. United Sq, centrepoint, paragon, great world city hav gd nursing facilities...

I got a gd milk supply fm pumping 5 times daily(used to be 6-7 but cut down coz im returning to work;i do shift work plus industry is male dominated)usually hav abt 150ml xtra to freeze daily but had my fair share of blocked ducts, infection n still seeing LCs n specialist dr:-( hubby n myself set a target of a yr....

Help ! BM decreasing ... ;( ... have Twins to feed.

Initially, during 1st month, I pumped twice a day with latching. It increased from 30-40ml per session to at least 120-130ml after 2 weeks and peaked at 150ml or more for another 2 weeks.

However, towards the end of 2nd month, the supply slowly drops to 100-120ml per sessions. Then I tried latching more with no pumping or just 1 pump for a week. And the supply suddenly drops drastically !!! To only 50-80ml per session !!!!

Now end of 3rd month, only 40-70ml per session !!! (I pump twice a day) ;(

It's dropping ;( how ?

Hence, I tried fenugreek for a week but no effect and I now try pumping 3 times a day (for a few days) but supply didn't increase, still at 40-70ml per session.

I eat fish daily & drink papaya fish head soup every 2-3 days but seems not taking effect ;(

Any other methods that can boost milk supply per session significantly ? Pls hlp !

Try to get more rest, I know it's hard esp when u hav twins!

I experienced lower supply due to infection n stress e last time,i resorted in jus taking more rest n sleep as advised by e nurses...delegated most chores to hubby n jus slept half a weekend away in my feverish state then but it was worth the rest as roughly 4-5days ltr, all seemed normal.

And I agree with drinking more fluids, I still take maternal milk, milo n occasionally horlicks...abit heaty but try to hav a serving of carrot juice every other day. I have a fren with fraternal twins, she bf exclusively n had e babies sleep wif her-let them latch often to bring up supply...

All e best n keep it up!

Checking. For those doing exclusive pumping. Do u wash ur breast pump parts after every use? I'm boosting supply so I pump every 2 hr. it's tedious n I scared I caused the pump parts to wear n tear as I steam sterlise after each use. I'm using Medela Pisa n bb is 9 weeks old

I wash & steam my medela pump after each use, except the tubings that doesn't come into contact with the milk.
It should not wear & tear so easily ;)

Don't worry.

Yep same here, wash n sterilise aft every pump session. Unless I'm out, then will wash clean n use hot water to soak pump parts b4 pumping if it ain't convenient to use sterilising tablets

Yup same here. But I sterilise with boiling water & melted my Medela bottles. I left it on at night. Luckily my sister offed it in the middle of the night.

Okie.. Glad to know thatI'm not the only one sterlising after each use. The seller who sell me my pump told me that washing is sufficient. But I still don't dare try. Scared bb get sick..
