Hi,

Any mummies here whose child has a hole in the heart? For me, my daugher has ASD (hole in the heart), so i thought i will be great for mummies to have a support group to share and support each other...

My DD2 had 2 holes also, 1 medium size and 1 small one.. discovered at 1st month checkup.... was not diagnosed at birth. (BB with hole will have a noiser heart beat as blodd flow thru more holes.) Was referred to KKH cardiac centre and did a scan.

At the 5th m checkup, the doc just did a stethoscope listening, seems like not so much sound so the medium hole sort of closing up ...... Doc said sometiem the hole will not close up completely but no worries.

Anyway, still looking for insurance coverage for her as all want to charge higher premiums, may need to exclude the heart -related conditions form the policy:nah:

To reply Cyn..... some cases are only found out when kids grown up......eg my elder sis..... maybe medical assessment not so advanced back then.... she was only diagnosed as having ASD in her Pri 1 healthcheck..... subsequently then she went to have an op.

Anotehr case in newspaper a few months ago.....a 7 yr old boy as diagnosed to hv ASD in her Pri 1 healthcheck.... Hospital gave apptm to assess in 2 months time but he collapsed after a run......... so sad.......

Any others to share ? I worry my ger won't be able to engage in sports/ activities when she has grown up eg. dancing, school PE etc

jus share w u, my couz is 22 this yr....she is preggie with her precious bb gal now....edd is end sept....

she was born with a large hole in her heart, underwent operation to close it up when she was 1mth old....

then she grew up into a beautiful young lady....we used to play captains ball every sunday with fellow church youths....no problems....

maybe u might wanna limit the intensity of e sport, but as long as doc says its ok for her to carry on with physical activities, dun worry :) teach ur gal to noe to limits, when she is tired, stop n rest...dun push herself too far :)

Hi,

My daughter was diagnosed with a hole in the heart when she was 9 months old, she has 3 holes, 2 small ones and 1 big one, as it is ASD, she has no symptons at all, so she is thriving well and is even 80th percentile, so it's only when she is sick then we see paeds that we know there is a hole...

I don't think there is a chance of her hole closing on it's own, so we are observing it and when she is bigger, if her hole is still there we will have to close it, the only thing we can hope for is that it is not open heart surgery but a procedure, then she can recover faster...keeping our fingers crossed.

hi Jen,

Just to let yo know, so far none of the insurance company are willing to insured my daughter, they say after her procedure, if in 2 years no relapse then they can consider, maybe you will have better luck then me...

im born with hole in the heart.. underwent surgery when i was still an infant.. i couldnt rem much abt what happen.. but just that i couldnt get involved in PE when i was in pri sch.. until sec sch, PE teacher sorta 'force' mi to join in.. if i need to pluck out a tooth by the dental, ive to seek approval frm my heart specialist.. (which nv happens cos i always pluck my own teeth) haha.. so when i know im preggie, im kinda scare that its hereditary..=x again, go back and seek approval.. kinda troublesome..>.< other den tat, i still live as per normal like any normal kid.. except every once a yr hab to go back NHC.. before i reach 16, is KKH..

hi jenlee, my baby has got murmur is it what this thread is refering to?
we bought a policy for our baby too but the insurance agent say it's quite common nowadays when baby born with murmur so premium wasn't higher but they did get a medical report from hospital to make sure it's not too serious. but i forgotten what was inculded in the policy got to go through it again but think was more on hospitalisation coverage.

Hi! Good for you Lisa, if the insurance company is willing to accept after the report from the hospital, then it means that your dh condition is not too serious. For me after the medical report, none of the company are willing to offer her a insurance coverage...so now i am extending my medishield to cover her for all hospitalization except if it's for her heart procedure...they all ask us to try again after the procedure.

And yep, this thread is for mums and dads to share and support each other, if their child has a hole in a heart and a heart mumur is a common condition for children who has a hole in the heart.

Hi Vodkager,

Don't worry too much, cross the brigde when is here. My mIL has VSD, so maybe that's why my dd has ASD, but all these are sporadic, so don't be too stressed! For me, i am thinking of having another child, so i am quite worried that my second child will have the same condition as my first!! Keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh yes, cardiac doc told us that in future if she needs tooth extraction/surgery etc, have to tell dentist that need to take ANTIBIOTICS.

As for insurance, still waiting for all clear report from KKH so that insurance co. willing to cover, but Doc said sometimes the hole will become smaller but never close...... then how ? cannot be insured for heart problems liao:nah:

hi JenLee98,

don't worry too much.. it might not be as serious as what you think.. the hole will get smaller and smaller eventually.. does she needs to take any medication?

hi smurferoos,

thanks for the concern!

Dear Jen,

When i first know of my dd condition, i was so upset and depressed, i even thought i was the cause of her condition, maybe i did something when i was pregnant with her i was so so guilty, but after 1.5 years i have accepted it. As dd needs to go for checkup every 6 months, so the paeds not very optimistic that the hole will close on it's own, but the good news is that maybe don't need open heart surgery, as long as she can wait till 3-4 years old, then a simple procedure should do the trick!! I am really keeping my fingers crossed! As for insurance i am not too sure about your case, maybe they will take it up?

Hi vodkeger,

Just smile and be a happy, then your baby will also be a happy baby :)

goodness, i felt so relieved when i read this thread.. i'm nt alone.. i feel so 'zi bei' abt my ds having this problem.. he's small sized at birth.. did get UTI. . than doc cfm he had the hole in the heart problem.. yesterdae just went to kkh .. but the doctors din do the scan for him ytd leh.. onli listen to his heartbeat.. supposed to do scan 1/2yr once.. but thy sae dunit .. aniwae i asked the doc if i could have the actual name of the hole in the heart.. its Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) ..

mommies can click on the picture .. i found this info online yesterdae and found it useful =) .. my ds can go for the cardiac catheterization. (In this procedure that takes place in a cardiac catheterization lab, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the leg that leads to the heart. A cardiologist guides the tube into the heart and inserts a special device, commonly shaped like a dumbbell, into the hole in the septum. The device is designed to flatten against the septum to close and permanently seal the ASD. In the beginning, the natural pressure in the heart holds the device in place. Over time, the normal tissue of the heart grows over the device and covers it entirely) .. i hope u all find this useful !! :red:all mommies.. cheer up.. they will get well !! *chEeRRs*

Right now I am 21 weeks plus pregnant. At 20 weeks when I do the detail scan, the doc saw a white dot on the baby's heart. But he can't confirm whether it is a hole or not cos there are due to a few factors. Cos my tissue skin is quite thick, make the scan blur, plus 2 c section scars inside. At 21 weeks, I went back for a rescan. The doc said so far it is ok. Never really see the hole. But will be doing the growth scan of the baby at 28 weeks again. Feeling quite worry after I heard the news at 20 weeks. Hopefully the baby is ok.
