Hi! My gal is graduating and to be in P1 next yr, but her progression worries me. She is having problem in school and her workbook in every pages was written "guided" by the teacher. She has got learning issues and she cannot even write A-Z without mistakes. She is currently undergoing a therapy session in KK hospital and will need to revert to physcology soon.
At the meantime, really need views and suggestion from any experience mothers or any1 whom had encounter the same issue.

She is always in bad condition when i ask her to start to do her homework and that she is always in a world of her own. But not to the extend of autism. Please help!

hi,
u cld just guide her along slowly with no pressure.Easier said than done but once she masters her alphabets n phonics she shld be gd on her way.Too much pressure sometimes sends the child back into his shell.Start again fr the basics.Use nursery bks or levels lower.Teach her as u wld a very young child. Not only tht wld be fun for her it wld also give her a better foundation.

She could have a learning difficulity (like dyslexia). Get her refered to the child guidance clinic for an assessment. The sooner it is diagnosed, the earlier professionals could offer the right help.

Does she sit and listen in class? i did some reading and self-researching on children behaviour affecting their concentration in class which leads to poor learning.

I think a child's low self-esteem could be due to reinforcement during her school time when, explicitly or implicitly, teachers could be givng her an impression that she is not up to par.
If possible, let one parent be her partner in learning. Leaving learning to the school does not work. Family support in terms of constructive support and encouragement s important. Since she is entering a new environment next year, it would definitely help to let her know that her parents are always with her. It would certainly give her confidence if she can turn to someone for help when she encounters problems in her school work. That will also boost her confidence.
I will personally go easy on giving a child a label... like dyslexia etc. Sometimes mild dyslexia can be overcome without even going for prof intervention. I have personally seen two cases of students self-fulfilling the "prophesy" when parents are too quick to get their kids labelled with dyslexia problem (to get their kid exempted from Chinese in school !!!)

I agree with Ruth. Dun be too quick to diagnose. I mentioned in other threads about the implications before.

I'm currently tutoring a girl who is diagnosed to be slower than other children. Twice a week, 1 hour session each. Short sessions as she has poor attention span. But after getting individual attention from me, she's coping alot better. In school environment, it's very hard to give that type of attention to the child. & waiting for KKH's therapy sessions can be quite frustrating & you may not see the progress because the sessions are not consistent or regular.

The question is whether your child needs specialised instruction (from trained professionals) or just more individual coaching & more time.

Pls discuss yr concerns with your child's teachers.

If a child has language difficulties & is generally slow in learning compared to peers, deferring P1 may be an option, esp if IQ scores hover ard 70-low 80s. It is also necc to get right help.

Otherwise, you shld make sure that the rest of the year is spent fruitfully - getting yr child to enjoy learning (less dreamy), work on language, reading, comprehension & handwriting basics.

PM me if you have other concerns.

take care
