Pediatrician necessary for newborn

Hi all,

My baby is currently one month old.

Just want to ask for advice and suggestions on consulting pediatrician. I wondered if it is really necessary to consult a pediatrician or a GP will be just fine.

And, any good recommendation for pediatrician in Jurong?

Thanks

A PD would be better cos' they are trained to handle bbs & toddlers, GP not so....

So would advise you consult a PD

Hmm cos' I stay in the East, so the PD that I go to might be too far for you...:tlaugh:

1 mth old baby, i would say, go to PD. even ds is alrdy 1yo but i still will choose to bring him to pd if he is ill.. but of cos, it is up to individual parent. some will bring to gp esp those gp who are good at babies. some gp are v good on babies too but hard to find =)

If your baby is generally healthy and problem free, you can see a GP to do the necessary vaccinations.

If your baby is allergic like mine, then a pd would be advisable.

My advice u go to PD at least till your baby 2 yrs old then switch a reliable GP.

IMO, I would prefer a PD as they are more experienced in handling infants.
As for GP, what I worried is that their medicines may be too strong for our little ones.

I never thought I had a choice... was recommended a PD at TMC and seems it makes sense to have one. Newborn after all. Nearly every month for almost 2 years go back to her for my girl's vaccination shots. Now my new baby will be same thing. I'll stick to consulting PD.

actually PD n GP r the same, both also doctors just that PD r specialised in treating babies' illness. if it is just the common flu n cough n vaccines, just a normal GP will do. unless it is more complicated cases then refer to a PD.
GP also hv kiddo medicine, so dun wry.
pin had been seeing a GP since NB n nvr seen a PD (unless those at hosp) b4. the meds work fine on her, n my pocket doesnt burn a big hole each time.

Yeah, i agree with Pin. For normal illnesses, there's no need to see a PD. But if you wanna be cautious mabbe can see PD in the first 6mths then switch to GP after that. The GP i go to sees a lot of kids and even has nebulisers to rent at a much cheaper price than PDs so I think it really depends on your GP. :)

To me I feel that it's ok to bring your child to a gp for common illness but that is provided u r sure that gp is well versed in treating kids. Otherwise a pd is a better choice. Have not brought my son to a go yet as didn't find one that fit into what I wan yet so sticking with my pd. But out o office hrs if son does need to c a dr will bring Him to mt a 24hrs to see the dr there.. I do know afew that's good with kids

I will go for the Pd as well...especially if this is my No1 kid.

better to have an assuarance 1st that the right diagnosis is given and best care is given.

Down the road, when one is more used to the new roles of parenting, and more used to things like fever, cough - then maybe can switch.

Some gps r not experienced in handling kids ESP babies n not all gps r responsible enough to refer u to PDs n they may give antibiotics just for minor issues. So to me unless u find one u know has experience with kids n babies if not rather spend the money the have a peace of mind. :) I've had friends who had bad experiences with gps. :)

well thats why must trial n error lorr, n also depend on your luck.
same as adults, if u meet a GP or PD or gynae who u r not comfy, u also will switch, wont u? not all PDs r responsible n can diagnose properly. some PDs also give nonsense advice. im sure we hv seen a few in the forum too.
so, to each of his own. :)
imo, just your own preference. :)

Yup I do agree that there r some black sheeps in pds too.. So it's always impt to ask someone for a referral than doing your own trial n error if u r not sure what kinda gp u will see.. I've seen gp taking out mims(our medical drug guide) n deciding what medication n dosage when the drug prescribed is not uncommon.. Heard from my patients tellin me gps given their bb wrong jabs at the wrong time.. So I wouldn't really think trial n error would work.. Get a recommendation n try it for yourself rather than trying out on your own.. That's just my opinion.

this is really gone case!!!!!!

yup i kinda agree with u. actu no matter GP or PD, i feel tt most impt is to make sure they are really that good at handling babies/kids. if they are, GP is definitely okay =)
