Baby feeding

Dear all Mummies...

Need the advice again...I called up Mead Johnson hotline today, speak to the parenting specialist about my boy doesnt seems to like milk, is he drinking less base on his age (7 mths), about 700-850ml of milk including one solid meal which is porridge. Im kind of shock when the specialist told me its alot for a 7 mths old baby. Parenting Specialist says average milk feed is around 500-600ml with 2 solid meal, baby will have and get a better nutrients.

I thought baby less than 12 mths needs lots of milk at this time so i rather let my boy drink more milk now with one solid and start 2 solid meals when he's around 8-9mths. Is my thought the right way? Isnt having more milk for him as at 7 months better?

Im concern of my boy milk intake, cos he usually takes about 1 hour to finish his milk, got to re-heat few times and try lots of ways to make him drink...

I find his weight growth very slow, as at 6 months, weight percentile is 50%, height percentile is 90%.

Birth weight : 3.795kg
5.5 months : 7.15 kg
6.5 months : 7.25 kg

From 3rd months, he doesnt like to drink milk, takes very long time, we must force feed, tried change the teat, formula before but still the same...I just felt tat in a mth he only grow 100 grams...haiz...

actually, you are right about the amt of milk and the no of feeding times.

Till 1 year old, bbs still get most of their nutrients from milk. Hmmm, maybe the person manning the hotline is just a telephone operator and not a nutritonist? :p

About the weight, why dont't you check with your gynae? I used to be quite stressed out over the percentile until i realised that as long as my baby's weight increase is parallel to the recommended growth plot, and the pediatrician is okay with it, then there shouldn't be any prob.

My bb is quite petite, and pple are always so surprised when they know that she's 5 months! What can i say? She's got a bb face! hahaha

Cos a lot of the charts used are based on FM fed bbs, if your baby is breast milk fed, the graphs are not reliable.

Hi uddermummy,

haiz..tats wat i read from somewhere before...my boy is drinking enfalac so i called up Meadjohnson and its not an operator. I left a msg for the specialist to call back and it was the specialist who return my call...

Sorry, u mean gynae or pd? I ever raise this issues to my PD few times and he keep saying his weight is ok. Baby till 12 mths should gain at 10kg which mine is ok...He say im so small size and wat for i want a giant baby...To be frank, weight is no longer important to me. Being a first time mum we sure got such anxiety and lots of why...Im contented as long as my boy is growing healthy...From 3rd mths onwards, my boy seems like doesnt like milk, we need at least 1 hr to try all methods...I just hope he can drink well...

My baby is quite petite, and pple are always so surprised when they know that she's 5 months! What can i say? She's got a baby face! hahaha

How old is yr gal now? Mine got lots of hair so everyone say he's mature...very funny look...Baby should have baby face ma, too mature not so suitable...haha:)

Thanks Regina for the sharing...tats is wat i think they should have more milk so i decided to delay my boy 2nd solid feeding at around 8-9months...

My mum agree with the specialist saying is better to have 2 solid meals...The specialist sound like having more milk doesnt mean you boy will get all nutrient. He need some solid food to balance up...

As for the weight, he's consider average but personally i find the growth after birth is very slow. Birth weight close to 3.8kg, as at 6.5 months only 7.25kg. It show from birth till 6.5 months my boy only gain 3.45kg...

Any mummies,

Can share when you all start giving your baby 2 solid meals a day? When baby is eating 2 solid meals, how much milk feed a day?

As for my earlier post, do u all agree with wat the specialist said?

I also have the same thinking that milk is better until 1 year old. So I started Iggy on 2 meals only after he turned 1 your old. before that was 5 milk feeds of 240ml each + 1 bowl of porridge. Now is 4 milk feeds of 240ml each + 2 bowls of porridge.

But then I realised alot of books, mummies encouraged 2 or even 3 meals earlier.. and lesser milk intake. Well, I agree that they should get nutrients from food already but then milk should still remain as the most important source of nutrition until they turn 1 yr old. :) Some babies just have more interest in milk, so delay in semi solids.. vice versa..

Hi Shulyn, i think your dear son is growing just fine. Just in case you're still worried about weight issues, here's something i got from the web:
http://www.webmd.com/parenting/underweight-baby

There's no universally accepted cutoff point between what's underweight for a baby and what's merely lean. But the pediatric growth charts I use at each "well-child check" -- routine checkups for young children -- help me decide. Certain situations raise a red flag with me, and prompt me to look for problems affecting a child's rate of weight gain. I look for the following:
  • A sudden drop of two major percentiles (for example, from the 75th to 25th percentile) in a child who has been gaining weight along a specific curve on the growth chart. (A percentile is a statistical way to compare one child's weight with that of many other children.)
  • Weight that is less than the third percentile for age. (Of course, a child who comes from a family that is very small may look way below average on the pediatric growth chart but may be a perfectly normal weight for his family.)
  • Slower than average daily weight gain for age (for example, for a 13-month-old the average monthly weight gain is about .25 kilograms, or half a pound).
  • Weight that is disproportionately low for a child's height.
Children who fall into these categories need to be followed very closely by their health providers. Most doctors will take a careful diet history, social history, and family history to identify any behavioral or genetic reasons for a child's slow weight gain. Other causes of slow weight gain -- such as neurological problems, gastrointestinal problems, kidney problems, and other metabolic problems -- are less common than behavioral and genetic causes, and can usually be picked up by a physical exam and a select number of laboratory tests.

My dear daughter's 1 year old and only 7+kg. She's tripled her birth weight already and meeting milestones so doctors and the lactation consultant say she's doing very well. dont be too worried about baby's weight.

I dont quite agree with the specialist. I read somewhere that the baby's main nutrition in the first year comes from milk rather than solids. But that said, i'm not a nutritionist... :)

I started alicia on her second meal sometime in the 7th-8th month i think. She still latches on so i've no idea how much she drinks...

btw my boy 2.5 mths and he's 6.3kilo alrdy.. my hubby keep asking me to CONTROL his diet! waopiang how to control?!

if the pd is okay with his weight, don't have to control what. :p

If not, you can ask your pd about giving your boy water instead of milk for his middle of the night feeds if he still has these feeds.

The next time you go to the pd you can ask about his wt. See if the pd is in favour of controlling his weight by replacing a couple of feeds with water instead. :)

babies will double their weight by 3 mths and arnd 1 year shld triple their weight.
if your boy is born about 3 kgs or so, 6 kgs is ok for 2.5 your old.
as long as you dont over feed its ok.
pin was born 3.2kgs, when she was 1 year old, she already 12 kgs, which is 4 times her birth weight, wasnt an issue to me nor my doc.
i never once controlled her diet, even til now, she is eating and eating and eating.
-.-" she is 2.5 years old but ppl already thinking she is 3 years plus.

Its true, but lots of people say my boy only put on 3.4kg for 6.5 months is too little. The PD which i went back is very popular, its at Thomson, Singapore and Baby Child Clinic, Dr Ong. He's always very busy and clinic very crowded want. To PD is as long as baby till 12 mths weight 10kg is enough. For parents like us, isnt they ate too little? Will they be receiving enough nutrient ?

Btw, so i still need to let my boy drink milk instead of addition one more solid meal? And when my boy is 8-9 months then i introduce 2 solid meals a day???

may i ask what solids u give your son?
if its cereal, can add in the BM/FM then he can also get the nutrients from there.
if your son is really not drinking well, no harm addin one more solid meal.
perhaps tt solid meal u use FM/BM to prepare it?
babies all differ, if they really refuse, then we need to be flexible n change our plans.

i got ask pd about feeding him some water but he asked me back "what's the reason u want to feed him water? milk is water alrdy. why must still feed him WATER?" ask until i speechless... haha...

pd said his weight is gaining more than normal babies cause his birth weight only 2.9 but is okay as long as he's feeding well, poo-ing well, don't have to do anything extra.. but my hubby so scare he'll become a fat boy.. :tlaugh:
