hi Carol,

IN my opinion, there's really no hard and fast rule as to which you should offer him first.

may i know how old is he now?

lots of PDs recommended that we should start weaning process slowly only after 6months old. and with that in mind, it's also merely letting babies learn to understand and try the different types of texture/taste. and not so much on filling thier little stomach up with solid. as milk asn still be thier primary source of nutrients.

just my 2cents......

He's goin to be 5 months old in a week time . Yup I didnt give him alot . At first just let him try a bit . And now he seems to be eating well so Im giving him a bit less than 2 teaspoons . Followed by 115ml of milk .

I started intro solids at 4mths+....sorry but when it comes to nutrition, i dun trust PDs at all...y? cos their nutritional knowledge is v limited....go ask ur PD how many modules of nutrition they took when they were studying....their specialisation is medicine, they onli noe v basic info abt nutrition....

i chose to start at 4 mths for several reasons:
1. my boy could sit on his own with some support
2. he has tongue control where he noe how to push with his tongue, means he noe how to swallow solids
3. he seems very very interested in our food, salivating when he sees us eat
4. he has doubled his birth weight @ 3mths
5. his weight gain has slowed down tremendously, means milk alone is not enuf....
6. he not v interested in milk, onli drink to make himself not hungry....but he is not full...

if ur child is ready, i dun see e need to purposely withhold starting solids unless ur child is preemie or is not ready, then u will need to follow 'corrected age'....

these r wot my 6mths old boy has tried (in e order i introduced to him):
4mths onwards
organic white rice cereal
organic home made brown rice cereal
peas
pumpkin (organic)
corn

5mths onwards
sweet potato
broccoli (organic)
potato
spinach (organic)
tapioca
baby carrots

6mths onwards
organic tofu (look @ e sodium content, e one i got was e least)
avocado
apple (red fuji apple)
pear (green soft flesh)

going to introduce from 7mths onwards:
threadfin fish
organic chicken
organic beef
kailan
baby yam
chye sim
long beans
barley
oats
apricot
peach
green beans
asparagus
beet root
mango
papaya

hopes the list gives u a rough guide :)
i intro new foods every 3-5 days, depending on whether i got time to prepare new foods or not..i usualli batch produce n freeze, then my maid will steam to heat up n serve during the day when i'm at work....

have taught my maid how to intro new foods, how to look out for allergies n how to be in control during mealtimes...thankful my boy loves food n is v greedy, so mealtime r always a breeze....

btw, i started with 1-2 tsp of cereal/puree...then gradually increase...now my boy can finish 1 whole bowl of pureed food on top of his normal milk intake....sometimes he will ask for more in e evening, so my maid is giving him 1 main meal in the morning, 1 small meal at dinner time....with regular milk feeds in between....

Yup . He can hold his head upright and he knows how to swallow the cereal well now . Aft some thought I think it's better to feed solids first then at least I know how much he can take . Cos I read from babycenter should drink milk first ...

The reason World Health Organization recommended weaning from 6 months is actually from a biological stand instead of a nutritional stand....

ting, can give petite miam (the brand).....but i prefer giving breastmilk yogurt cos more nutritious!!! plus no flavorings...dun want my boi to develop taste for 'tasty' foods.....natural still best as far as possible :)
