hahaha! Aiyohh, then my poor dog will definitely kenna a lot of scolding from my ger!

Hmmmm, I do hope that dd will never turn out anything remotely like our attention-hogging ris low! I hope dd will 'boomz' in other ways than wearing 'rad, zebra prinz bigini' down orchard road. :tlaugh:

Hi there uddermummy and paigemummy,

Want to find out more about ome from you guys cos from reading seems like you both have lots of experience with it.

Just brought Vera to see ENT doc at NUH and doc says the acid is causing her voice box flaps to swell. So put her on ome. Didn't get a chance to ask much about the side effects cos was last patient.

May I know how much are you giving? Vera is 8kg, on 2mg 2x a day. I find that the pink ome tab is hard to dissolve completely. U have the same experience? Like there's still sandy grains at the bottom. So measuring 2mg in 2ml won't be that accurate right?

Btw, is your tablet form or syrup form? NUH said get syrup form from KK, but KK says they don't have it either.

Uddermummy you worried it's affecting iron absorption? how to tell? They say look at the underside of lower eyelid - supposed to be red, but Vera's is light pink so I'm also worried she's not getting enough iron, and now this Ome may affect iron absorption...

Thank goodness got you guys to chat to about GER and meds!

Hahaha that could really happen. That friend tells me that her gal & dog fight over toys quite often :err: And yes, Eva should NEVER EVER boomz that way!

hi yummymummy, this is weird! My ome is also from nuh, but from clinic a pharmacy. It's in suspension form, and has to be ordered 3 hours in advance. I don't think KK has ome in suspension form.

Dr Aw told me that the max dose for ome is 1ml per kg. So the max dose for vera should be 8ml a day. But i think the advise from pager is to use the lowest dosage effective.

Eva's eyelids are quite okay, but she was really lethargic for the past 2 months. She would wake up and then start getting tired one hour after she woke up. In fact, I think it has affected her ability to crawl. :(

I haven't really looked up the effects of iron-absorption (plus minerals, vit absorption etc) of ome, but what i suspect is that since dd was on almost full dose, the drastic lack of stomach acids would have hindered the absorption of food in some way or other.

Have you tried Zantec? Zantec is a milder acid-reducer, while ome is an acid blocker that all but turns off acid production. I tried asking for a switch to Zantec but wasn't successful in reducing the ome dosage before switching.

Epicuren can help you on this cos Seb is on Zantec.

Uddermummy thanks for telling me! Thought NUH didn't have susp so made special trip down to KK...now have to go back to NUH to get the susp form next time from clinic A.

Good to know Vera isn't on the max dose. But if doesn't improve maybe doc will up the dosage from 2ml next visit.

Most other Trisomy 18 (Vera's condition) are on Zantac. Dunno why doc straightaway give her ome. Now I know what to ask the next visit.

yeah, Vera's been more and more lethargic too over the last 2 months - it's affecting her physiotherapy improvements.

i'm hoping to be under Dr Aw too - like you and Epi - to manage Vera's condition better. Now it's just all guess work.

Thanks again!

yummymummy,
The Clinic A pharmacy serves patients from that clinic (children specialists) so that's probably why it carries forms of med different from the other pharmacies serving other departments (eg. ENT dept).

managed to cut down dd's dose to once a day, 3ml. This is the longest that we've managed to cut down her dose without any acting up.

Praying that she can tahan the reduced dosage and eventually be weaned off the med altogether.

uddermummy,

That's wonderful progress! Considering how unsuccessful previous attempts were .... great job :) Our kids' systems are so sensitive that almost everything has to be done in small incremental steps. And every small victory counts :Dancing_wub:I really really hope for you that your DD can be weaned off ome.

I revisited that infant gerd website and read about aloe vera juice helping gerd issues (supposed to help with the healing, digestion). After researching around, I decided to try a bit with Seb. Going to try for a month and see if it does help. If it doesn't, I'll drink that bottle of juice myself :001_302:

is aloe vera suitable for bbs below one? Am keen to try if it is. If it doesn't work, oh well, I can also finish up the juice. :p

I think so coz the bottle I got from GNC says for children up to 1 year, to give 1 teaspoon. For Seb's age, it says to give 1 tablespoon twice a day but I'm only giving once a day to ease it gently into his system. Also monitoring his poop & pee to see if it's affecting him in other ways. My dad says aloe vera is cooling so don't give too much. I'm giving it to him after a major vom to counteract the taste of vom acid and to soothe his throat & esophagus.

Yeah, we shouldn't waste it ... besides, it's supposed to help with weight loss so heck, I could use some of that too!

Merry Christmas to you, and Seb, and your family!:Dancing_wub:

will try it on dd! Thanks for the tip!

btw, i also need help with weight loss. Sigh! I've just managed to wear my non-maternity jeans but just the other day, a salesgirl asked if i was pregant with my second child. :nah:

Wishing you, Eva, hubby & loved ones a Blessed Christmas! :)

Hope aloe vera can help your dd ... so far Seb likes drinking it post-vom coz I think it washes down the horrid, acid taste of vom. I used to give him water post-vom but this seems to settle him better. Needs more monitoring :001_302:

That salesgirl's behaviour is yet more evidence that our customer service has a looong way to go. Such lack of tact :embarrassed: I also kena asked that kinda question before ... I told them with a straight face that it was water retention :tlaugh:

Here's to the new year helping us both with weight loss!

Glad to hear that Seb likes the aloe vera. :)

Hee, maybe next time i'll tell those insensitive pple that it's water retention too. So far, I just tell them that it's the leftover spare tire from my pregnancy. The more polite ones will squirm a bit, but the really rude ones will ask me why I still haven't lost the postnatal bulge.:nah:

Then again, the silver lining is that they don't think that we have the bulge because we're just naturally fat! Hahahah!

DD hasn't been reacting to the reduced dosage of ome, and we're only feeding her 3ml once a day now. Praying that we'll be able to totally stop the ome soon.

Hey, that's very promising! :Dancing_wub: She has been on the reduced dosage for over a week, rite? Hope she has also put her lethargic days before her and is now perky & cheery as ever.

My irregular sleep patterns haven't helped with my weight. I lost the postnatal bulge during the 1st stressful 6 months then it came back. And I think once we're over 30, metabolism rate just goes downhill! Seb used to prefer hubby carrying him coz hubby is more, how I shall put it, comfortable for Seb with supportive surface area. So one plus point is Seb has been liking my 'enhanced' surface area ... I tell him, it's as though I'm his King Koil :err:

She's been on the reduced dose for the past 1 month. I reduced the dosage slowly before cutting it down to once a day. Quite promising so far.

But her weight gain is worrying as usual. If only i can give her my fats. :p

And just recently, she had a bout of loose stools, prob due to fish or chicken, and she lost weight. :(

:tlaugh::tlaugh::tlaugh::tlaugh: My hubby also has more supportive area than me, but my girl still prefers me. I think it's the smell of stale milk on me! Dd knows that only mummy has milk on demand, even if daddy has nipples too, cos she looks v insulted and will start to cry when we show her daddy's nipples, and ask jokingly if she wants to latch on!:001_302:

wife just return from PD. yup, bb has mild reflux.:embarrassed:

Doc says should clear by 6th mths when her stomach muscle is stronger. Luckily her wt gain is ok (1kg over 2 weeks) so no cause for concern.

in the meantime, need to keep her elevated during feeds and inclined during zzz. No medicatn needed at the moment as PD felt her case very mild.

looks like it's going to be more sleepless nites of screaming and vomiting milk for us...

oh dear! Cheer up, my ger has mod reflux, and her weight gain is really slow, but the spit up has really lessened as she grew older.

She's been on med now for 6 mths, and is 9 mths old now. Seems like her reflux is getting better cos we've managed to cut her dose down to once a day.

The trick for Gerdlings is to feed them often and in smaller quantities, and to really, really burp them well, and keep them elevated.

You have slings or carriers? They really saved me when my ger was fussing no end and refused to be placed in the cot.

Hi uddermummy,

Happy happy new year to you, Eva with her 'bo geh' smile & hubby :Dancing_tongue:

Your description is so funny! I think our kids have a superb sense of smell that they use to identify people and in your case, milk supplier :p Seb likes to burrow into the arm pit of the person carrying him ... I suppose the smell is most intense & concentrated there!

Ah, Eva's a sharp one who doesn't take being bluffed lightly :tlaugh: She knows not all nipples are equal! Your anecdote reminds me of an occasion in the car on our way to physio. Seb was sitting on our maid's lap in the backseat with me while hubby was driving. Seb kept looking at the back of the front passenger seat where a black 'S' hook was hung. So at a traffic light, hubby reached back an arm and waved that hook at Seb, saying "Look here, Seb, cute black hook!" In response, he heaved a big sigh that probably translated into "Don't patronise me!" Maid & I started laughing & couldn't stop ... hubby went back to driving in a huff hahahah.

Hi kohym,

My heart goes out to you guys about the sleepless nights. My boy has moderate GERD and he used to be merlion king. There were so many nights of him screaming & arching in pain, vom'ng and of me finding all means & ways to pacify him. Uddermummy is right ... smaller feeds & frequent burping really help, along with elevated positioning during carrying & sleeping to minimise pain from the acid.

Can try letting baby sleep in bouncer seat or even reclined car seat ... make sure tummy isn't compressed in any way. We got Seb a GERD mattress that has an incline and I further increased the incline by putting folded towels under it until I found an angle that could prevent the backflow of acid during zzzzz. During really bad refluxy nights, he was pacified by sleeping on my chest with me sitting reclined against pillows.

It does get better ... Seb isn't in GERD-induced pain anymore and sleeps flat on his mattress. His vom is significantly lesser ... the triggers for his vom are now due to his other issues. Hang in there, ok?
